CHAM training colleges offer diverse degrees that empower graduates to build a career in the health professions. Our graduates are nurses, midwives, lab technicians, public health professionals, mental health clinicians, and more, and are making a difference to expand healthcare access and equity across Malawi.

Bachelor’s Degrees

Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences

Graduates of this program will be fully equipped to deliver medical laboratory science work. Biomedical science is the application of biology-based science to medical use, be it research, health monitoring, or treatment. Improvements in healthcare continue to be driven by dramatic advances in the basic biosciences. This degree course offers a thorough, up-to-date training in a wide range of medically related disciplines. Students will gain strong practical skills, particularly for application within laboratory settings, but have a notable degree of flexibility in the application of their degree. Graduates of the program have been successful within clinical, public health, teaching and research settings. 
Program Duration: 4 years, full-time.

Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent with six credits, including Biology, English, Mathematics and Physical Science.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Midwifery

This four-year degree in nursing is the highest-level undergraduate nursing degree. B.ScNM graduates will be fully-certified nurse-midwives, and be eligible to pursue post-graduate studies in nursing and other health-related fields. This curriculum prepares students for a professional career in the provision of comprehensive, modern healthcare services, while also equipping them with the knowledge, skills and critical thinking skills to learn about and respond to new challenges in healthcare and healthcare services provision throughout their future career. BSc.NM students learn relevant skills and innovative techniques through classes in nursing theory and practice across a range of nursing and midwifery courses, as well as within natural and social sciences courses.

Bachelor of Science in Public Health

Public health is the study of health promotion and disease prevention at the population level. Students of the BSc. will gain a comprehensive understanding of public health, including health problems and health care systems. Students will become specialists on surveillance and control of communicable diseases and knowledgeable of the social, cultural and environmental determinants of health. Graduates are skilled scientific researchers and writers and critical members of biomedical teams. Students work in semi-independent capacity, actively applying their knowledge to integrate all health services – encouraging practices that promote spiritual, physical and mental wholeness. Graduates will be equipped to work as public health professionals at a local or international level, for diverse stakeholders in public health across multiple sectors, and will have the proper foundation for continuation into advanced degrees.

Diplomas

Diploma in Biomedical Sciences

This training program enables its graduates to perform and deliver essential medical laboratory diagnostic and research services. This is achieved through providing students with both theoretical knowledge and advanced, practical skills in laboratory techniques. Graduates of this program will be capable of providing high-quality laboratory support of health care services.
Program Duration: 3 years, full-time.

Eligibility: Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent with six credits, including Biology, English, Mathematics and Physical Science.

Diploma in Clinical Medicine

This training will enable students to deliver clinical services on a variety of health topics, positively impacting community health throughout Malawi. Students will learn the basics of disease detection and treatment, as well as diverse prevention and health promotion techniques. Graduates will be equipped to deliver diverse clinical services, and will be certified Clinical Officers. 
 Program Duration: 3 years, full-time. Mature entry: 18 months.

Eligibility: Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent. Individual schools may have specific selection criteria regarding score ranges in specific subjects. Generally, credit passes in Biology, English, Mathematics and Physical Science are required. Mature entry is available. 

​Diploma in Counseling

After completing this program, students will be able to apply advanced skills in community-based and clinical psychiatric care. Graduates go on to become tutors in mental health and psychiatry, to work for public and private health organizations, and to become researchers in health-related projects. 
Program Duration: 2 years, full-time. The first year of the program is parallel with the Certificate in Counseling course.

Eligibility: Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent. At least 2 years of recognized post-secondary school training. At least 2 years of work experience. 

Diploma in Nursing & Midwifery

The diploma in nursing and midwifery is a three-year, integrated training program in both nursing and midwifery. Once graduated, students will assume the title of NMT – nurse-midwife technician. Students receive two yers of general nursing training, and then one year of midwifery training.

Certificate in Clinical Medicine

Students within this program will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent and cure diseases. Through developing both clinical knowledge and keen interpersonal skills, students will learn to provide crucial healthcare services towards both the treatment of diseases and the promotion of good health. Graduates will be certified Medical Assistants.
Program Duration: 2 years, full-time.

Certificates

Certificate in Counseling

This program trains students in the basics of counseling skills. The professional knowledge acquired within this program will enable students to work in diverse fields, including mental health, HIV/AIDS care and counseling, work with orphaned and/or vulnerable children, relationship therapy, group counseling, personal development and psycho-spiritual growth counseling, and beyond. 
Program Duration: 1 year, full-time.

MSCEs. At least 2 years of recognized post-secondary school training. At least 2 years of work experience.

Certificate in Community Midwifery

Post-Graduate Degrees

Bachelor of Science in Clinical Medicine (Mental Health)

Students will gain clinical competency required to provide quality mental health services in a wide variety of clinical settings. The core skills developed include individual counseling, conflict resolution, teaching, program planning, leadership, research skills, and mental illness detection and prevention techniques. After graduating, students will be able to provide comprehensive psychiatric care, both as individuals and as part of multi-dimensional teams.

Bachelor of Science in Mental Health & Psychiatric Nursing

After completing this post-basic training degree, graduates will be psychiatric nursing technicians, capable of providing mental health services at a community, primary, secondary or tertiary care level. Nurses will learn how to operate within and act as leaders of a multi-dimensional care team. Management and leadership skills will be sharpened, including the planning, implementation and evaluation of mental health programs and services. Upon graduation, will be equipped not only to provide community-based and clinical services, but also to work within research and academic settings.

Eligibility: Registered Nurses (must possess at least a university diploma in nursing). 2 years of work experience.

(Coming Soon) Upgrading Diploma in Registered Nursing & Midwifery

This course will give certified nurse-midwife technicians (NMTs) a “fast track” to a registered nurse (RN) certification. This comprehensive program will train NMTs in both clinical and community-based nursing skills. NMTs will learn management, research, critical thinking and decision-making skills, enabling them to be leaders within diverse environments in the health sector, including clinical, community and public health settings.
