Ministry of Health Launches Three Key EPI Documents to Strengthen Malawi’s Health Systems.

The Ministry of Health launched three Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) strategic documents today at Kawale Community Hospital in Lilongwe, marking a significant step in strengthening Malawi’s health systems and improving immunization coverage nationwide.

The event, held in commemoration of World Immunization Week (24–30 April 2025), highlighted the critical role of vaccines in safeguarding public health. The launch was graced by the Honorable Minister of Health, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda MP, who presided as the Guest of Honor.

The Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM), a vital partner in Malawi’s health sector, was represented at the event by its Director of Health Programmes, Elimase Kamanga Gama. CHAM plays a crucial role in delivering immunization services, particularly in hard-to-reach areas, through its 194 network of faith-based health facilities.

As Malawi’s second largest health service providers after government, CHAM contributes significantly to EPI initiatives, ensuring that vaccines reach underserved communities. CHAM’s participation in the launch underscores its commitment to collaborating with the government in achieving universal immunization coverage.

Key Documents Launched:

1. EPI Manual – A guide to support Health Surveillance Assistants (HSAs) in following child immunization schedules, ensuring full vaccine coverage for children.

2. National Immunization Strategy – The first of its kind in Africa, providing a comprehensive framework for Malawi’s immunization programs.

3. COVID-19 Deployment Plan – A strategic roadmap for the continued rollout and management of COVID-19 vaccination efforts.

This milestone reflects Malawi’s unwavering commitment to advancing healthcare and ensuring equitable access to life-saving vaccines for all citizens.
